Fireworks in Crescent City, CA

When I first seen this picture (above) I thought: Wow, my daughter is growing up fast!

When we arrived in Crescent City, CA we quickly checked into our motel, which was located right across from the beach, and then headed down to the city park where a big Fourth of July celebration was in progress.

The celebration at the park was slowly winding down and people were already selecting locations to watch the fireworks. We ate a corn dog and walked down to the beach. It was freezing cold and eventually my daughter had to be wrapped up in a blanket to keep warm. The beach was full of driftwood and everyone was building fires with the wood. I could not believe how much wood there was and later found out there were several bad storms that had washed the driftwood to the shores.

My daughter and I decided to walk over to the lighthouse located on a rocky point out from the beach. The tide was coming in and water was soon covering the path we walked to get there. When my daughter noticed the path was slowly disappearing from the tide, she began to cry wondering how we were gonna get back across to the beach. When we did decide to head back, we had to get our feet wet, but were able to get back across safely.

While my daughter and I were checking out the lighthouse, my friend and son had found a cozy spot on the beach and built a fire out of some drift wood. Wow, what a difference that fire made. We were able to stay cozy warm. Soon everyone was building fires too and it wasn't long before the beach was full of smoke. Smoke filled our eyes and we could hardly see as a result, but we were glad to be toasty warm! We made S'mores by the fire and life was good!

It was so relaxing laying under the stars by a warm fire listening to the sound of the waves crashing onto the beach. I loved it! The water was getting closer and we could feel the spray as each wave inched in on us. I started to wonder if we would have to move before the fireworks began and started wishing they would hurry up and start before the tide got us and our fire.

When the fireworks did start it was an amazing sight. My mind started clicking as I tried to think of what beach we could go to next year to watch fireworks. The tide never did reach us or our fire, but it did reach other people's fires, which caused a lot more smoke. We had to finish watching the fireworks through a big smoke cloud but it was still a lot of fun.

After the fireworks were over we worked to put out our fire. A Crescent City fireman came and told us the fire department hoses down the beach once everyone is gone, so not to worry (as long as it is not a big fire we were okay to leave it). We walked back to our motel and went to sleep wondering what was awaiting us tomorrow as we continued our journey up the Oregon coast!

What a great Fourth of July!
